Well..This article might seem a surprise to a lot of people, but come on guys, someday or the other..we have to face the reality! But why not now??Why,we,the common Indian citizens are reluctant to let the growing discontent among the Kashmiris come out in the open?
Since India's partition in '47,there has been a discontent brewing in the minds of the people of Kashmir..Virtually,they have been reduced to mere pawns, whose fate hangs in the hands of its rulers. From Maharaja Hari Singh,To Mirwaiz Umar farooque, the objective of Kashmir's freedom is to have full control over the territory & not the so called "welfare" of the people of Kashmir. Many people would argue the fact that the PoK & the Indian Side of Kashmir are contrasting to each other, with the Indian side being comparitively better equipped with aminities, development, but we,sitting in the comfort of our homes, cannot feel, cannot go through the pain, the oppression & the bias a common Kashmiri faces.
I remember going to Vaishnodevi once,& meeting a shopkeeper of Kashmiri descent. He described the story of Kashmir in such simple words, but which since then, has had a profound impact on my mind.He said, that they treat Indians as their brothers, but for them,Pakistanis are no enemies either.Although, they treat both the sides with respect, yet they are often at the receiving end from both the sides, whether it is due to the societal bias or because of the torrid past of Kashmir. In today's scenario,it is so hard for a Kashmiri migrant to get a house on PG,without proper verification, even in multicultural metropolis like say,Delhi!
Is this the way we treat our fellow citizens??The once serene, quiet valley, which was renowned for its beauty,is now virtually an Arsenal, with no respite in sight & a bleak future. The Indian government has resorted to Regimentation, when the buzzword should have been "Co-operation".The brutal killings by the Indian Armed forces is nothing, but oppression of Voice of the new generation of Kashmiris. In a sovereign,Democratic republic, even a basic right-the right to Express oneself is being snatched...but why only Kashmiris? If they ask for their rights to be restored, they are silenced forever..Curfews are imposed..Shoot at sight orders implemented...don't they have the right to have control over their own land??Certainly, they do...
The Indian armed forces have done a fantastic job in curbing the menace of Infiltration, tackling the so-called "Jihad" or the war for freedom,by developing schools in far flung areas of Laddakh,Kargil & Siachin, but have lost the plot on ground..While Pakistan, has always promoted the more Extremist method of spreading Terror in minds of the people, ransacking the beauty of the region, orphaning children, widowing woman! Thus, nothing solves the problem...
Leadership of both the countries have changed many a times, yet the problem is at stalemate..From the Era of JL Nehru & Liaqat Ali Khan...To The era of Manmohan Singh & Yusuf Raza Gilani, there has been no concrete solution to this grave problem.Nothing seems to solve this, not even the intervention of the US,the UN,International peacekeeping organisations...nothing...because,Kashmir issue is too complex an issue to have a solution!Kashmir has become a classic case between 2 warring brothers for the custody of a piece of property, where neither side loses anything, while everything is to gain...The Guinea pig is always the people of Kashmir..Who,in the end are left with stones & guns to avenge their fate!!
Many theories have come & went, but what do we have in our hands??A bleeding Kashmir...with civilian deaths everyday??A struggling Kashmir, with a cry for freedom from both sides??Can u imagine, what would it have been like if we were still under the British rule??If u are a true Indian,I know, your blood too would be boiling at this thought..but spare a thought for people of Kashmir, who in reality, have never got freedom...First they were colonized by the british & now are struggling to search their identity in being an Indian,a Pakistani or a Kashmiri??The govts. fight for the control, but none is ready to take the first step towards peace process..The only glimpse was in the time of AB Vajpayee, named as the architect of peace process, but in order for a happy callaboration the two parties must be equallly good...which unfortunately,Mr. Sharif & Musharraf were not...
Tomorrow,I'll continue this note...& hopefully suggest a solution to this problem, which I sincerely hope will draw the attention of millions of Indians,Pakistanis,Kashmiris,Hindus,Muslims,Sikhs alike...but most importantly the governments of the two nations..the awam of Pakistan..The Indian Janta...Mr. Manmohan Singh,Mr. Asif Ali Zardari,Mr. P.Chidambaram,Mr. Rehman Malik,Mr. SM Krishna,Mr. Shah Mehmood Qureshi,Maj. Gen. Deepak Kapoor & Maj. Gen. Ashfaq Kiyani...
